Can One Medicine Cure Every Disease? Then Why Believe in "Universal Earthing"?

The foundation of any dependable and secure electrical installation is earthing.
Yet, for years, the market has been flooded with tall promises around "Chemical Earthing":
Works seamlessly in any soil condition
Guaranteed resistance below 2 Ohms anywhere
25-year lifespan with zero degradation
100% "Fit & Forget" - no maintenance required
As electrical engineers, ask yourself honestly: Is this scientifically true?
I'll give you a basic example.
When you visit an MD physician, do you say: "Doctor, give me one common pill that cures COVID-19, Malaria, and Typhoid all at once"?
Of course not. No such universal drug exists.
A responsible doctor will immediately say: "Get your blood and urine tests done first. Only diagnostic reports reveal the disease and determine the right prescription."
For electrical grounding design, the same diagnostic reasoning is applicable:
Soil Resistivity Testing is the "Blood & Urine Test" of an Earthing System.
Only after analyzing site-specific soil data can an engineer scientifically determine:
Electrode sizing & depth: Length, diameter, and quantity needed
Ground enhancement treatment: Which compound to use and in what exact volume
System lifespan: Corrosion risk based on soil chemistry and pH
Installation methodology: Vertical boreholes, horizontal trenches, or a comprehensive mesh grid
Now, let me ask a serious practical question:
Whenever you inquire about or purchase earthing, has any vendor ever asked you for site Soil Resistivity data first?
If yes, applaud them - they respect engineering fundamentals.
If not, pause and reflect. Selling such a safety-critical system as a generic, over-the-counter commodity without technical diligence is a serious compromise on electrical safety and human life.
Major standards (such as IEEE 80 and IS 3043) clearly mandate that grounding performance, fault dissipation, and electrode longevity are direct functions of local soil resistivity.
There is no universal "magic pill" in earthing.
💡 Core Takeaway / Tagline:
"Industries don't just need generic chemical earthing rods—they need customized, application-engineered earthing solutions. Don’t buy claims; demand technical proof."
Next time someone pitches a "works in every soil" earthing rod, demand three documents:
Soil-based calculations: Mathematical proof achieving <2 Ω in your soil layers.
Engineering simulation: Software validation for fault current dissipation.
Corrosion life data: Technical proof of a 25-year lifespan in your soil pH.
No simulation, no calculations? That’s not engineering—it’s an unverified gamble with electrical safety.
(Note: This is not a critique of any specific brand or advanced technology. It is an appeal to prioritize sound engineering principles over marketing shortcuts.)|
There are undoubtedly many parameters needed for earthing system design, which we will discuss in the upcoming blog. However, a key factor in the effectiveness of the Earthing system at my site is the soil.
